President's Report

The committee has been incredibly busy over the last month planning a range of exciting summer events and continuing to strengthen our connections in the North East with a particular focus on university partnerships.

Upcoming Events

They key event of the JLD summer calendar is our ball which will be held on the 10^th of September at Wylam Brewery. This year, our ball is sponsored by SD Legal Services, a new and exciting sponsor for the JLD. SD Legal Services offer a full range of process serving, investigation and enforcement solutions and have a strong presence in the North East. The committee would like to thank SD Legal Services for their sponsorship and hope to maintain this new relationship.

The JLD summer calendar also includes a summer quiz at Atom Bank on 13 August. This is a free event but participants are encouraged to make a donation to the local charity Live Well with Cancer.

We are now looking to the Autumn season and are planning a pottery painting event and Charlotte Tilbury master class. Look out for more details on this in the coming months!

Partnerships with local universities

Over the past few months, the Newcastle and North East JLD has been strengthening its relationship with the University of Law. The Committee's University Liaison Officer, Daisy Agar, has met with university representatives Katherine Meehan and Kate Bassett to explore opportunities for future collaboration between the JLD and ULaw. Proposed initiatives include Q&A panel discussions, law firm visits and workshops focused on graduate recruitment skills, such as client interviewing and negotiation.

Through these initiatives, the JLD aims to encourage more University students to become members and engage with the organisation's social events throughout the forthcoming academic year. The University has also committed to supporting the promotion of JLD events, including featuring advertisements in its weekly student newsletter.

Ultimately, the JLD hopes to break down perceived barriers and address any concerns students may have about pursuing a career in the legal profession. By attending JLD and JLD-ULaw events, students will have the opportunity to build connections with young legal professionals, gain valuable insights into the industry and develop greater confidence as they set out to begin their legal careers.

Summer is a really busy time for the JLD committee. I am incredibly proud of all the work we are doing and very excited for our Summer Ball!
